Writing, Research & Digital Storytelling: Engaging with Emory and Beyond
Course Overview

In this course, students will engage in experiential learning by studying various campus resources and the city of Atlanta as living exhibits. Students will work with historical collections from the Emory Libraries’ Archives & Special Collections and contemporary scholarship to trace narratives that chart the growth of Atlanta as the “new Hollywood” and the “Silicon Valley of the South.” They will conduct interviews, on-campus field observations, and narrative editing to build multimodal stories (audio, video, web), culminating in artifacts that contributes to research in public discourse about Emory and Atlanta.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, students will have a solid understanding of their local discourse community, Emory and the city of Atlanta. By treating their surroundings as living exhibits, students will engage critically with both literary and popular representations of the university and the city, while conducting hands-on archival and field-based research using local artifacts. This immersive approach will enrich their awareness of how place, culture, and narrative intersect, allowing them to see themselves as active participants in the ongoing stories of Emory and Atlanta. Through this course, students will not only gain foundational training in college-level academic writing and ethnographic research but will also develop stronger communication and public-speaking skills. The culminating digital storytelling project will challenge them to synthesize their learning into a polished, multimodal artifact, demonstrating their ability to think critically, write effectively, and create under time constraints.
