Foundations of Neurobiology: From Basics to the Bench

Course Overview

Foundations of Neurobiology: From Basics to the Bench
This pre-college course introduces students to how the brain works—from major brain regions and diverse neural cell types to how communication in the nervous system can break down in neurological diseases. Students will learn how scientists study the brain using different model organisms and experimental systems. Through guided tours of active research labs, demonstrations of cell culture, and microscopy imaging of neurons, participants will see how neuroscience discoveries are made. Ideal for students interested in biology, psychology, or medical research.

• Identify major brain regions and describe their fundamental functions.
• Distinguish key neural cell types (e.g., neurons, astrocytes, microglia) and explain how
they support brain function.
• Describe how neuronal communication occurs and how disruptions can lead to
neurological or neurodegenerative diseases.
• Explain why scientists use model organisms (e.g., fruit flies, mice, stem-cell–derived
neurons) to study the nervous system.
• Observe and interpret basic microscopy images of neural cells.
• Understand how neuroscience research labs are organized and how different research
techniques contribute to scientific discovery
