Voice Science: The Origins and Practical Applications of Singing and Voice Use


Course Overview

The voice is an instrument that everyone holds inside of themselves. Have you ever wondered why Adele's voice differs from Taylor Swift's? This course aims to expose you to the world of voice science. The field covers various voice uses, from public speaking to singing and theatrical projection. This exploration will begin with the origins of voice study and introduce anatomy/physiology and modern acoustic research to explain how people make the sounds they make. There will also be aspects of functional listening (listening to understand what is happening) and exercise development to increase the abilities of the voice user.

Course Objectives

Students will gain an understanding of the origins of voice study, anatomy related to voice use, acoustics for voice use, functional listening skills, and the ability to create exercises for different vocal needs.
