Contemporary Art Through Sculpture
Course Overview
In this course, students will be physically manipulating materials to create conceptually engaged works of art. Get ready for a fun, active, and messy experience! The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the conceptual, formal and technical elements of contemporary sculpture. Through participation in hands-on experimentation, slide lectures, presentations, readings, and discussions students will develop conceptual concerns in contemporary art. Projects will address the elements and principles of sculpture. This is also a class that explores how students can engage with and appreciate the broader conversations of contemporary art.
Course Objectives
Students will:
- Be introduced to the expanded field of sculpture.
- Explore a range of basic studio technical and creative processes.
- Engage in reflective analysis of their own work and respond to the work of others.
- Develop perceptual skills through analyzing and identifying visual components.
- Learn the technical applications of a variety of tools, equipment and materials.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills of visual elements and principles through projects
- Develop understanding of the relationship between form and content in sculpture.
- Learn how to use materials, tools and studio in a safe manner.
Additionally, students will learn how to approach and engage contemporary art in a more informed and engaged way.

Instructors
Dana Haugaard
As an artist working with sound and sensation, Dana investigates how our bodies remember the physicality of its history. Dana has been a resident in the Atlanta Contemporary’s Studio Artist Program and is a Hambidge Fellow. He has recently been shown at the Atlanta Contemporary, Zuckerman Museum at Kennesaw State University, the Macon Museum of Arts and Science, and the Urban Institute of Contemporary Art in Grand Rapids Michigan and won the Forward Art Foundation’s 2021 Edge Award. Dana received his MFA from the University of Iowa.
