Readings in Pop Lit and Culture-Dracula

Course Overview

An exploration of literary works (fiction, poetry, drama, essays) that have had or have a popular readership, and an examination of the factors governing popular taste and literary production.

Our readings together will consist of a very deep dive into Dracula, Bram Stoker's famous novel. Along the way, we'll read small selections to enhance our understanding of the work. Also, we will read Stoker's own notes and edits to the manuscript to see how the writer developed his ideas and narrative plan. Our readings and experiences will also consider the influence of the novel and popular permutations in fiction, film, and human history/life. Other opportunities are under development. You'll be writing often, speaking, and creating some multi-modal projects as we have space and time in this short class.
