Noodle Narratives on the Silk Road


Course Overview

This course introduces the development of Chinese language from proto Sino-Tibetan roots to modern standard Chinese, and presents the chronological changes in syntax and phonology. We will discuss key historical stages in Chinese developments, and analyze it from the view of linguistics aspects.

Instructors

Hong Li

Dr. Hong Li is a Professor of Pedagogy in the Department of Russian and East Asian Languages and Cultures at Emory University and the Director of the Emory College Language Center. She received her Ph.D in Chinese Linguistics from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. At Emory, She teaches Chinese language courses at all levels, Classical Chinese, as well as courses on Chinese culture and Chinese linguistics. She also directs Emory’s summer study abroad program at Peking University.

Her research interests and publications lie in the areas of Chinese language pedagogy, second language acquisition, and Chinese syntax. She has published articles and book chapters in venues such as the Journal of Chinese Teachers Association and the Modern Language Association volumes. she is the first author of a series of 6 volumes of Chinese textbooks, titled Access China: A classroom video course for Chinese learning. Her most recent book (as the first author) was entitled Fun with Chinese Grammar: 35 Humorous Dialogues and Comics.
